columbus monroe smitherman
Funeral services for C. M.
Smitherman, oldest member of Antioch Church and community, was held at
Antioch Church January 4th, 1956. The house was filled to its capacity
with relatives and friends of this good man.
The many lovely floral offerings were beautifully arranged across the entire front of the church. Granddaughters of the deceased were responsible for carrying them to the grave side after the service. Grandsons were active pallbearers.
A mixed choir from Antioch and Centrville sang "How Firm A Foundation" and "Abide With Me." Rev. Forrest Hicks sang "Beyond The Sunset." Mrs. Clifford Ward was pianist.
Rev. J. C. Hill, pastor of the church, officiated with fitting tributes to the long useful life, stating that he had been loyal and faithful in attending the church he loved to the last. Several other ministers were present.
Mr. and Mrs. Smitherman had just recently celebrated their 62 wedding anniversary and his 90th birthday with open house. He had been unusually active for his age, having picked a bale of cotton this past fall.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Effie Fulghum Smitherman, four sons Grady of Woodward, Virgil of Antioch, Guy and Glenn of Centreville, three daughters Mrs. Morgan Wallace (Bessie) of Bessemer, Mrs. Herman Jones, (Verda Lee) of Calera, and Mrs. Ben Narramore (Coy) of Tuscaloosa, 22 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Friends and neighbors join the bereaved family in sorrow and regret that the home, which stood so long, with such a fine influence is broken. For us it was Christ for him to live, but for him, it was gain to die.
