Pvt. Marion F. Smitherman, 20, of Helena, Ala., and his wife were wading into the river with their arms about each otheer when they stepped into deep water and it is believed the fact that Mrs. Smitherman was clinging to her husband caused both to drown.

When they were lifted to the surface Mrs. Smitherman's arms were still locked about her hus- band but before they could be lifted into a boat the body of the soldier slipped back into the water and was lost.
