howard mayfield smitherman

Mr. Howard M. Smitherman, one of the most popular as well as useful citizens of Centreville, died at his home in this place on last Saturday night, after an illness of about two weeks. Most of this time he was about his place of business trying to work.

He was the youngest son of the late Judge and Mrs. Smitherman, and a brother to Joe Smitherman of Stockton, Calif., Wiley Smitherman of Jackson, Miss. and Mrs. Nelle Gardner of Cen- treville.

The funeral was conducted from the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, and attended by people from all sections of the county, Dr. W. T. Waller officiating.

Howard Smitherman was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a faithful attendant of all its services, and probably no man in the county has done more for those in distress than he has. There never came a call to him that he did not answer in person, and if there was sickness in the community be was the first to come and the last to leave, and when the hour of death came he was always ready and willing to be of assistance.

He was 40 years of age, and leaves a wife, two brothers, one sister, and a number of other relatives..

His funeral Sunday evening was one of the largest ever held in Centreville, which showed with what love and affection he was held by the people of this county.
