James Dewey Mabe, 86, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Monday, May 21, 2007, at
the Arizona State Veterans Home in Phoenix after a long illness. He was born
Feb. 2, 1921, in Stokes County to John Gideon and Jettie Rogers Mabe and
attended schools in Walkertown. He served four years with the Marines in the
Pacific in World War II and then worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and in
circulation at the Winston-Salem Journal before moving to Phoenix in 1960. There
he worked in circulation for the Arizona Republic newspaper. He is survived by
his wife, Opal Smitherman Mabe, of Phoenix; a son, James Edward
Mabe, of Jamestown, Calif.; and two daughters, Jettie Mitchell of Buckeye,
Ariz., and Dewey Elaine Sprinzl of Phoenix; six grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Sell of Winston-Salem and Eva Tesh of
Welcome. The funeral was arranged by A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary in Phoenix
with burial with military honors at Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery
