SMITHERMAN,
JUNE OSBORNE - 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away in the morning of April
30, 2012. Mrs. Smitherman was the daughter of Floyd Ellsworth and Sue
Brittain Osborne (both deceased) of Mills River, North Carolina. Her
father was a dairy farmer who sold his milk to Biltmore Dairy Farms in
Asheville, North Carolina, among others. She graduated from Mills River
High School, and she obtained a degree in elementary education from
what was then the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina,
now known as the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She taught
school in North Carolina before moving to Oak Ridge in 1952. She was a
teacher at Linden Elementary School for most of her years as a teacher
in Oak Ridge, retiring in 1986. Also, she was a longtime member of
First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. She enjoyed spending time
with her family, playing bridge, sewing, needlework, traveling, and
collecting mushroom miniatures. She also volunteered in the office of
First United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Smitherman was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Osborne Boys; and
two brothers, Thomas Fleet Osborne and Birdie Lenoir Osborne. Mrs.
Smitherman is survived by her daughter, Claire Hotchkiss and her
husband, Dr. Richard Hotchkiss, of Chesterfield, Missouri; daughter
Lynn Ross and her husband, Michael McCutcheon, of Oak Ridge; son Dr.
Kenton Smitherman of Carlsbad, California; her brother, Morris Floyd
Osborne, also of Oak Ridge; and six grandchildren. A memorial service
will be held on Saturday, May 5, at First United Methodist Church in
Oak Ridge at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Troy Forrester officiating. A
visitation will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that any memorials be made to First United Methodist
Church in Oak Ridge. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of the
arrangements.
