mate smitherman
PITTSFIELD. III., Sept. 4 -
Funeral services for Mate Smitherman, widely known resident of
Pittsfield, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel
of the Plattner funeral home, with burial at Milton. He had been a
resident of Pittsfield for 50 years, coming from Milton, and was 84
years old on August 14.
His body was found hanging in the garage of his home at 425 North Jackson street, yesterday when his wife went out to call him for dinner. He had gone into town about an hour before his death, and chatted with neighbors. Investigation indicated he had shot himself in the head with a pistol, the body falling from a stepladder that he arranged.
Neighbors heard the screams of Mrs. Smitherman, and came to help. Coroner Warner Plattner took the body to the Plattner funeral home, and an inquiry was held without an inquest.
Mr. Smitherman had retired as an engineer at the King Milling company, and had been in poor health for sometime. He still found time to participate in Masonic work, being a member of the Pittsfield lodge.
He is survived by his wife. Anna Zimmerman Smitherman and several nieces.
