matthew william smitherman

Matthew William Smitherman, 40, left this earth on Sunday, December 8, 2024, to join his dad, Bill Smitherman, who passed earlier this year.

Born December 18, 1983 in Daytona Beach, FL, Matt was extremely passionate about three things-his work as a Firefighter Lieutenant, Auburn football, and most of all, his daughters.

He grew up working on his dad's charter fishing boat, The Hooker, out of Ponce Inlet. Upon graduating from Spruce Creek High School in 2002, he entered Fire School at Daytona Beach Community College, where he became a Firefighter/EMT, then Paramedic. While still in school, he worked for the City of Holly Hill. He joined Volusia County Fire Rescue in 2003 where he achieved the rank of Battalion Chief, later stepping back to Lieutenant. He served on the E-Board for the Fire Department and was part of the team that worked to successfully to get the Firefighter's Cancer Bill, Senate Bill 426, passed in the Florida Legislature, which provides free cancer care benefits to firefighters.

Above all, his daughters, Kyndall and Savannah, were his greatest accomplishment. Everything he did was done for his daughters, whom he loved dearly and were on his mind until the very end.

He is survived by his daughters, Kyndall and Savannah Smitherman, mother, Bambi (Slavens Smitherman) Morgan, stepfather Gary Morgan, stepmother Sandi Smitherman, sister Amanda (Smitherman) Albert, stepbrothers Brian Morgan (Jingyi), Thomas Morgan (Kim) and Chris Horne, and nephews Riley and Kylan Albert.

A celebration of life will be held February 8, 2025, 11am at Friendship Community Church, 2108 Hibiscus Dr., Edgewater, FL 32132.
