SHREVEPORT - Mellicent Smitherman Pittman, 92, was born on October 23, 1930 in Shreveport, LA to Robert Green and Lillian Barret Smitherman. She passed away on January 15, 2023 from a lengthy illness.

Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Dalton R. Pit- tman, her parents, and two sisters, Betty Ann Smitherman and Gloria S. Cady.

Milly is survived by her children whom she deeply loved: Kathie (Sherwood) Bailey, Beth (Keith) Jones, Carol (Mark) Pilgreen, and Stephen (Christine) Pittman. She had five granddaughters whom she adored: Meg (Bub) Fournier, Laura Jones, Jennifer (R. J.) Middleton, Heather (Ben) Dennis and Ainsley Pittman (fiancée Thomas Wobby); and five great-grandchildren whom she treasured: Reuben Fournier, Wyatt and Brynn Middleton, and Cash, Sal, and JenEllen Dennis.

Milly loved spending time with each one of them sharing her deep faith and her infinite knowledge on everything, especially literature, history, geography, and any sport in which they were involved.

After graduating at the top of her class from C.E. Byrd High School, Milly went to Sophie Newcomb College and then graduated from LSU, where she met Dalton. They married and made their home in Shreveport after Dalton served in the Korean War.

Milly and Dalton were very active at First Baptist Church, serving in many capacities. Milly was elected a Deacon Emeritus, served on the church staff after Dalton died, was active in the church's WMU, and was a strong supporter of First Baptist Church School while her children were students. Milly was an active partner in Dalton's farming business until he passed away in 1986.

A service to celebrate her life will be held in Frost Chapel of First Baptist Church, 543 Ockley, Shreveport, LA on February 25, 2023 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held after the service in the Church Parlor. A private family burial at Forest Park will be held at an earlier date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Shreveport or to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Milly's caregivers: Kellie; Christie; and the nurs- es, CNAs, and the nutrition staff at The Glenn Village Care; and LifePath Hospice.
