Robert H. Smitherman Jr., Delta Area Council Scout Executive in the mid-1950's, died early this morning at his home in Bessemer, Ala. His death was attributed to a heart attack. He was 58.

Mr. Smitherman had been in failing health and had not worked for several months, but his condition was not considered critical. He lived with his mother, Mrs. Ivy Smitherman, at 3532 Sixth Ave., Bessemer.

During his tenure as Scout Executive of the 12-county Delta Area Council, Mr. Smitherman undertook one of near the most massive development programs ever undertaken at the council's summer camp, Camp Tallaha Charleston, and he was credited with vastly expanding the Scouting program in the northwest Mississippi area.

Besides his mother, Mr. Smitherman leaves a son, John Smitherman of Bessemer, and two granddaughters. His wife was killed in a car-train wreck in Bessemer about two years ago.

Graveside services probably will be held Friday with Brown Service Funeral Home of Bessemer in charge.
