Mrs. Sarah V. Smitherman died at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, as the result of burns received Monday morning while burning trash in the yard at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. M. Cartwright of Fortyville, east of Odessa. Mrs. Smitherman's dress caught fire, and the flames swept over her. All things possible were done to relieve her, but all to no avail.

Funeral services were
held from Marvin Chapel Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Hinnah.  Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

Sarah VarJennie Read was born in Miller county April 8, 1864.

On Feb. 8, 1883 she was married to James Monroe Smitherman, who preceded her in death June 5, 1930.

Many years of their married life was spent in Concord community, and after the death of her husband she has made her home with her children, a large part of the time with Mrs. Cartwright.

Besides her only daughter, Mrs. Cartwright, she leaves two sons, Harry Smitherman near Mayview, and Roy Smitherman of Brookfield, as well as four grandchildren, a host of neighbors and friends, who are deeply grieved at her tragic death.

She was a modest unassuming woman, going quietly along the way doing good wherever possible, always a friend in time of need.
