Thurman Gray
Allred, son of Lillian Lolene Smitherman Allred and
John Ralph Allred, died peacefully in the early morning hours of April
12,
2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Jaudaine Carolyn Coggins
Allred,
daughter of Bessie Coggins Meyers and William Franklin Coggins, beloved
by
stepfather, Papa Jack Meyers, and devoted wife of 60 years to Thurman
Gray
Allred, followed him in death on the morning of April 13, 2002. Both
had
suffered from long illnesses. The Allreds leave behind three loving
children,
Judith Allred Kinney, Mike Allred and his wife Sherry, and Emily Allred
Hutchison and her husband Bob. They leave five grandchildren, Robert
Michael
Allred Jr., Steven B. Allred, Thomas Gray Hutchison, Lindsey Hutchison
and Jill
Kinney White and her husband James and a great-granddaughter, Shayla
Ashton
Allred. Mr. Allred leaves a brother, Russell Spencer Allred, his wife
and
family. Mrs. Allred leaves two sisters, Emma Nell Davis, Betty Wooten,
and a
brother, W.C. (Sonny) Coggins, and their families. Stationed in Hawaii
during
World War II, Mr. Allred served with the Fourth Marine Division
fighting in the
Pacific Theatre including the islands of Saipan, Iwo Jima, Tinian and
the
Marianas. Mr. Allred retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1976. Mrs.
Allred
retired from the Forsyth County Public Library in 1978, after
establishing the
first outreach program in Forsyth County. Married for over 60 years,
the
Allreds spent much of their retirement traveling both throughout the
United
States and Europe. Their most recent trips included a tour of Italy and
an
Alaskan cruise. Mr. Allred spent many afternoons chasing a golf ball on
courses
throughout the Southeast, while Mrs. Allred knitted blankets and caps
for the
neo-natal ICU at Forsyth Medical Center. Visitation hours will be at
Volger and
Sons Reynolda Road Chapel on Monday, April 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. A joint
service
will be held at Parkway Presbyterian Church, (Silas Creek Parkway) at 2
p.m. on
Tuesday, April 16, 2002. A tribute from the Marine Color Guard in Mr.
Allred's
honor will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the
family
requests that donations be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home,
Brenner
Children's Hospital or Parkway Presbyterian Church.
