EAST BEND - Mrs. Vernie Mae Davis Kirk, 74, went to be with her Lord
and Savior Thursday, March 24, 2011. Vernie Mae was born October 12,
1936 in Yadkin County to James and Mamie Davis. She will be remembered
as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who
devoted her life to taking care of her family and working on their farm
alongside her husband, Max, and son, Steve. She was an active member of
Friendship Baptist Church, where she served as their faithful secretary
for many years. In addition to her parents, Vernie Mae was preceded in
death by four brothers, John Davis, Paul Davis, Foy Scott, Glenn Scott;
and one sister, Olive Dale Smitherman. She is survived by her loving
husband of 54 years, Max Kirk; two sons, Steve (Cathy) Kirk and Barry
Kirk; a daughter, Denise (Chris) Bullin; six grandchildren, Holly
(Brian) Reavis, Stephanie Kirk, Kristen Casstevens, Kirk Casstevens,
Kaylee Bullin, and Michelle Key; one great-granddaughter, Janet Gaddis;
three brothers, James (Jean) Davis, George Davis, and Ezra (Maude)
Davis; four sisters, Betty (Dilliard) Simmons, Becky (David) Reavis,
Juanita Key, and Freddie Hobson; and many very special friends and
neighbors. A Funeral Service celebrating Vernie Mae's life will be held
Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in East
Bend with the Reverends Brian Poindexter, Ray Davis, and Brian Chilton
officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church
Cemetery. She will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. The
family will receive friends Saturday, evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at
Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The family would like to
express their sincere appreciation for all the visits, phone calls,
cards, and prayers over the past two weeks. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 4744 Siloam Road,
