Wiley Smitherman was born in Centreville sixty-two years ago, the second son of Judge Thomas J. Smitherman and Betty Howard Smitherman. Educated in the schools of Centreville, he began his long and successful business career while yet a boy, as a druggist in Atlanta. In the years that followed, he became recognized as one of the best salesmen in the South. He had headquarters in many Southern cities, but always Centreville was home to him. He came back regularly on visits and kept in intimate touch with his relatives and friends. No old home-town boy was ever more welcome. His jovial disposition and magnetic personality charmed everyone he met. Although he was compelled by ill health to retire from business at the first of the year, he never lost his good humor or his courage. When he was here on his last visit home, only two weeks before is death, his friends found him jolly and serene as usual.

On December 26, 1917, he was married to Miss Maude Bolling of Centreville. He is survived by his widow; one sister, Mrs. Nelle Gardner; two nieces, Mrs. Louie Waller of Centreville and Mrs. Eugene Ridley of San Jose, California, and many other relatives.
