William (Bill) Smitherman, 48, Wichita falls mechanic, died Friday night in a hospital heree from burns her received last Sunday.

He had been in critical condition since a fire Sunday morning at the Scott Street Garage, 702 East Scott.  Hospital attendants said burns covered most of Smitherman's body.

The fire happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday.  Firemen believed it started from a cigarette that ignited bedclothes in a semi-trailer where Smitherman slept.

John W Dean, co-owner of the garage, said Smitherman was in his employ and was in the habit of sleeping in the building.

Smitherman lived in Wichita Falls 13 years, and for 11 of them was employed as a paint and body man by the Scott Street Garage.  He was born March 23, 1906, in Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; two daughters, Mrs. Eileen Wagoner and Mrs. Melba Lou Williams, both of Wichita Falls; two sons, Donald Ray van Cleave with the Marines on Guam. and Billy Smitherman of Grand Prairie; and a sister, mrs. Audie Drake of Odessa, Tex.
