Mr. Smitherman was born at Liberty Hill in Bienville Parish on July 21, 1894. He was the son of Rachel Roden and Robert Grandison Smitherman, pioneer families in that area.

He received his primary education in the schools of Bienville Parish and was attending Louisiana State University when the United States entered World War I.

He volunteered for service and attended officers training school at Fort Logan H. Root. After graduating from there he served in France as a first lieutenant with the 347th Infantry Battalion, 87th Division. He resumed his education at LSU after the war and graduated in June of 1919 with a degree in agriculture. The oil business was opening up in this area at the time and he started work for the Gilliland Oil Co. in the Homer oil field.

He organized a drilling company with the late L. L. McDonald of Smackover, Ark., and the firm was later known as Smitherman-McDonald Drilling Co. Mr. Smitherman's brother, the late C. B. Smitherman, was associated with them. This partnership drilled the discovery well in Haynesville for J. E. Smitherman and associates.

Mr. Smitherman was active in oil circles for many years and, with the late S. P. Borden and their associates, he brought in the oil producing woodbine sand in the Carterville Field near Plain Dealing.
In 1943 he returned his interest to agriculture and developed an extensive planting business operating several large places near Shreveport. He was active in this business until 1970 when The retired due to failing health. Mr. Smitherman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his widow, Lillian Barret Smitherman; three daughters Gloria Cady, Mrs. Dalton R. Pittman and Betty Ann Smitherman, all of Shreveport; one sister, Mrs. Victor Mather of Hattiesburg, Miss.; one brother, David Smitherman of Shreveport, and seven grandchildren, William Michael Cady, Robert Walton Cady, Susan Barret Cady, Mary Kathleen Pittman, Elizabeth Ann Pittman, Carol Lillian Pittman and Stephen Dalton Pittman.

The family requested that memorials be sent to the First Baptist Church School Library Fund.
