Mrs. Mary Mahaley Speer died
Monday at 10 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. N.
Smitherman, at East Bend. She had been in declining health for some
time but death was not expected until the last few weeks. Her age was
72 years, eight months and 27 days.
During the past 15 years Mrs. Speer and her husband, Mr. J. D. Speer, made their home with their oldest daughter, Mrs. J. W. Whitaker, of this city. Before her marriage, Mrs. Speer was a Miss Carter.
In 1868 she was married to Mr. J. D. Speer, who with three chil- dren, Mrs. J. W. Whitaker of this city, Mrs. C. N. Smitherman, of East Bend and Mrs. S. C. Welch of High Point survive. Interment was in the Old Benbow graveyard.
